Cairns Lists 400+ Sports Clubs and Recreational Facilities for Local Players

Cairns environment and climate support sport, adventures and outdoor activities. More than 400 sport and recreational clubs and facilities operate across the Cairns region. Competitive leagues cover at least 30 sports including netball, basketball, rugby league, AFL, soccer, baseball, tennis, cricket, vigoro, polocrosse, hockey and lawn bowls. The council runs a free Active Living program delivered by qualified trainers at six locations including along the Esplanade.

Cairns is home to the NBL team the Cairns Taipans. The team plays at a venue known locally as the Snake Pit. The Cairns International Tennis Centre in North Cairns has 12 International Tennis Federation standard hard courts including one show court. The centre includes a clubhouse with function room, gym, pro shop, physio and massage rooms and meeting rooms. It hosts national and international tennis tournaments and provides coaching programs, clinics and school holiday camps.

Barlow Park serves as the region's premier rugby league football and athletics stadium. It features an eight-lane athletics track to IAAF standard, grassed field, long jump pits, grandstand, corporate boxes, function room, eatery outlets, amenities and car parking. The grounds host large-scale sporting matches, music festivals and expos. The recently redeveloped Tobruk Memorial Pool in Cairns North has a FINA approved 50m Olympic swimming pool, 25m lap pool, warm water therapy pool, toddler splash area, Flow Rider, cafe, two function rooms and retail shop.

Cairns State High School provides extra-curricular sporting opportunities including school carnivals, inter-school sporting competitions, national team based competitions and district and regional sport trials. School facilities include an oval, synthetic rubber based turf and an indoor sporting complex with sprung wooden floor and weights room. School events comprise inter-house swimming carnival, inter-house cross country, inter-house athletics carnival, lunchtime sport, staff versus students sport, Indigenous sports during NAIDOC and year 10 physical activity program. The school participates in CISSA interschool sport for years 10, 11 and 12 and JSS interschool sport for years 7, 8 and 9. Representative sport pathways run through TCC district, Peninsula region, Queensland state and national levels.
