Neighbours along McCormack Street in Edge Hill now hold monthly tool swaps that started in March 2025 and draw 18 households each time.

The exchanges matter now because rising rents in central Cairns have pushed more families into outer suburbs where isolation can set in quickly without deliberate contact.

On Lake Street the Rusty Spoon cafe opens its back courtyard every Tuesday evening for a free drop-in session run by the Cairns Neighbourhood Centre. Participants bring their own chairs and often stay until 9pm trading advice on everything from school enrolments to weekend markets at the Pier Marketplace. Further north in Trinity Beach the local surf club runs a Sunday morning coffee run that starts at 7am on the beachfront and finishes with a group walk along the boardwalk to the boat ramp.

Cairns Regional Council figures released in April 2026 recorded a 19 percent rise in registered community group members since the same month in 2024, with average attendance at suburban events sitting at 47 people. Entry to most of these gatherings costs between $5 and $8, enough to cover tea and biscuits but low enough that repeat visits remain easy.
