St Augustine's College Wins Two JSS Overall Champion Titles

St Augustine’s College secured the Overall Champion Boys School title while its Saints Combined team took the Overall Champion School crown at the recent JSS Grand Finals, highlighted by a 93-8 AFL win.

Partnership fuels talent pipeline

CQUniversity has teamed with St Augustine’s College in Cairns to develop local players ahead of the city hosting soccer at the 2032 Olympic Games. Cairns stands as one of only two regional venues chosen for Olympic soccer, spurring fresh investment in North Queensland sports programs.

The college runs 12-plus sports through its co-curricular offerings, including AFL, basketball and futsal. JCU Cairns Campus adds social 3x3 basketball and 6-a-side soccer sessions in Semester 2, with the Gunyarra Cup basketball tournament set for March of the next academic year.

Region supports broad participation

The Cairns area counts more than 400 sport and recreational clubs across at least 30 codes. St Augustine’s results sit within this network that includes seven clubs in the Cairns District Rugby League and six in the Cairns Baseball League.

Barlow Park serves as a central multi-sport venue for rugby league, athletics and other events. These facilities back the college programs and the CQU partnership aimed at home-grown Olympic pathways.

College and school sports development will continue through existing university and secondary partnerships as Cairns readies for the 2032 Games schedule.
