Cairns Approves $X Million Flood Defense Project Starting September 2026

The Cairns Regional Council 2026-27 budget allocates $14.8 million from the Queensland Disaster Resilience Fund for flood mitigation works along Trinity Inlet and the northern beaches. The funding targets levee reinforcement and drainage upgrades that directly affect 18,400 properties identified in the council's 2025 flood mapping update.

State budget papers released in June 2026 list Cairns as one of six regional councils receiving tranche-two payments under the program. The allocation requires council to complete detailed design by August 2026 before any physical works start. Local government records show the same program delivered $9.3 million to Cairns in the previous financial year for planning studies only.

Construction schedule and resident impacts

Earthworks at the Tingira Street and Draper Street pump stations are listed to begin in September 2026 and run through March 2027. During this period the council has advised that access to the Cairns Esplanade shared path will be restricted on weekdays between 7am and 5pm. Residents in Parramatta Park and Portsmith will receive advance notice of any temporary road closures via the council's existing SMS alert system.
